5 weeks ago, I shared an initial visual on the evolution of the most popular baby names in the United States (1880–2023).
Today, France’s turn with this new analysis of male and female names from 1900 to 2023, once again created using Power BI's native features (no custom visuals).
👉 This time, thanks to data from INSEE, we can observe generational trends on the French side:
👶 For male names:
- The impressive dominance of Jean (1900–1960)
- Followed by Christophe, Nicolas, and then the modern Lucas and Gabriel
👧 For female names:
- The unbeatable Marie until the 1950s
- Nathalie and Aurélie marking the following decades
- The rise of short and soft names like Léa and Emma, still very popular today
💡 We can see clear similarities between trends in France and the United States: historic, classic names give way—generation after generation—to shorter, more international names, often influenced by pop culture.
